Evidence of freshly-dug graves with the bodies of up to 200 Palestinians in the West Bank city of Jenin was seen by the Sunday Express.
Correspondent Norman Parker, while making his way to the refugee camp in Jenin, saw 40 fresh graves each holding five bodies.
A local Palestinian guide walked a small group of journalists to the refugee camp. The damage is horrendous. Buildings have been smashed to the ground, the city is littered with piles of rubbish, while women and children dig desperately in rain-soaked rubble for bodies and possessions. Large earth-moving equipment was being used in the search for bodies.
The director of Jenin Hospital, Dr Mohammed Ghali, said: "Perhaps over 300 people have been killed here, the Israelis have a big refrigerator truck and they have taken bodies away.
"A lot of the corpses looked like they had been executed, with execution type wounds. This is most definitely a war crime."
Miri Eisen, a Military Intelligence colonel, denied that there had been a massacre. She said the Palestinians had given themselves up in the other five cities. "At Jenin, they chose to fight and die."
She continued: "It was urban warfare between about 200 of theirs and a reserve brigade of ours."
She claimed that virtually every building had been booby-trapped. That was why so many buildings had been demolished. Israeli casualties included 23 troops killed.
