Explaining his delegation's position before the vote on a draft proposal on the situation of human rights in Sudan at the UN Third Committee session, the representative of Sudan objected that the resolution continually cited the use of the death penalty. The international community itself was not of a single opinion on this matter, the representative said.
By a recorded vote of 82 in favour, 34 against with 45 abstaining, the resolution was adopted.
Following the vote, the representative of the Bahamas said that while the Bahamas supported the draft, it did so without prejudice to its own belief that decisions on the death penalty should be left to States.
