Federal Liberal MP Alby Schultz said he had no doubt Australia would again adopt the death penalty if the decision was left up to voters. "I think if there's debate introduced on it, there's no doubt in my mind that it would get up," he said. Mr Schultz's call came as a newspaper poll showed 56 per cent of people surveyed supported the death penalty for major acts of terrorism carried out in Australia. The poll in The Australian newspaper showed most people also supported the death penalty handed out to the alleged quarter-master of the Bali bombing Amrozi, who has been sentenced to be executed by firing squad for his role in the attack that killed 202 people, including 88 Australians. Mr Schultz said a debate on the death penalty was needed to better inform MPs about views in the community. "The over-riding personal view of leaders ... needs to be tested in terms of their ability to bow to public pressure on issues that are of concern," he told ABC Radio.
