Five drug-traffickers, sentenced to death by a revolution court were hanged in public in the northeastern city of Birjand. Two of them, known as Nader Barahu'i and Samad Kargij, were arraigned by the court on charges of smuggling arms and four tons of opium to Iran from Afghanistan and Pakistan. A third man, Ali Akbar Reza'I, was convicted of smuggling 103 kg of heroin. Iraj Ahmadi and Shahriar Gharibpur were found guilty of smuggling 596 kg of opium and involvement in armed struggle. The executions were upheld by the State Supreme Court.
