former death row inmate Stephen Virgil McGilberry has been resentenced to 4 consecutive life sentences without parole.
Jackson County Circuit Judge Robert P. Krebs resentenced McGilberry for the Oct. 23, 1994. murder of his stepfather, Kenneth Purifoy; his mother, Patricia Purifoy; his stepsister, Kimberly Self; and his 3-year-old step-nephew, Kristopher Self. McGilberry was saved from execution in March when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that it is unconstitutional to execute someone who committed a capital offense while under the age of 18. McGilberry was a 16-year-old when committed the crime. The Mississippi Supreme Court on September 22 (see) dismissed the death sentence, and ordered the Jackson County Circuit Court to re-sentence him to life in prison without parole.
