Former Governor of Illinois and Hands Off Cain Honorary President Georage Ryan made an urgent appeal for an international moratorium on capital executions at the UN Commission on Human Rights in Geneva.
"I did it because the capital system in my state was, and still is, broken, racist and unjust ... On a global scale the situation is no better and in many countries it is even worse", said the ex Governor noted for having commuted into life imprisonment the death sentences of 167 prisoners.
The Commission, currenlty in its annual session, will have to vote within the next few days on a resolution promoted by the EU for a worldwide moratorium on capital execution.
"For the sake of human rights, clemency and ethics, why not put a stop to the death penalty machine in order to study its accuracy, its impartiality and its errors?", Ryan said.
The Commission has approved the anti-death penalty resolution since 1997. For HOC and Ryan the time has now come to strengthen the cause for abolishment of the death penalty with a moratorium established by the General Assembly. "How many innocent people have been put to death due to inaction?", Ryan asked.
