Fouad Boulemia, an Algerian Islamist militant already sentenced to death for murder, received a second death sentence for his involvement in the worst civilian massacre during the country's recent civil war.
Some 240 people were killed during the raid on Sept. 22, 1997, on the village of Bentalha, some 20 km (12 miles) east of Algiers.
Rebels cut off power before embarking on a rampage of terror, shooting dead, burning and slitting the throats of residents. Boulemia was a leading member of the Armed Islamic Group (GIA) which a few years ago was the North African country's top rebel group.
Boulemia denied accusations of kidnapping and raping women but admitted belonging to an armed group. Boulemia had also been sentenced to death in 2001 for the 1999 killing of Abdelkader Hachani, a senior official of the banned Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) Muslim fundamentalist party.
