France has been abolitionist since 1981. The death penalty was legislated out of existence in 1981 by the Socialist Justice Minister of the time, Robert Badinter. The last execution was in 1976, during the presidency of Valery Giscard D'Estaing who refused to pardon a convict accused of murdering a minor.
