Gagik Tadevosyan, the chairman of the commission on health, social security and ecology of the National Assembly of Armenia, said that there is a lot of discussion on banning the death penalty related to Armenia's entrance to the Council of Europe.
"It seems that for the status of a European country we need to regulate three issues - ban the death penalty, secure the rights of homosexuals and of the Jehovah's Witnesses religious organization."
The deputy said that the need to raise to European standards such general human values as the standard of living and health care services is consigned to oblivion.
Tadevosyan declared that the death penalty ban must not apply to the terrorists of the October 1999 attack on the Armenian parliament.
