Georges Ruggiu, a Belgian national who worked as a journalist in Rwanda during the events of 1994, pleaded guilty to, and was subsequently convicted by Trial Chamber I of direct and public incitement to commit genocide and crimes against humanity (persecution). Ruggiu was sentenced to 12 years' imprisonment for the crime of direct and public incitement to commit genocide and a further 12 years imprisonment for crimes against humanity, both sentences to run concurrently. Neither Ruggiu nor the Prosecutor appealed against the judgement and sentence.
