HANDS OFF CAIN: THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT SHOULD WORK AT THE UN FOR A UNIVERSAL MORATORIUM ON EXECUTIONS

"Will the death penalty be among the main issues raised by the Italian government at the UN General Assembly?”. The question was asked by Hands Off Cain Secretary Sergio D’Elia and Treasurer Elisabetta Zamparutti to Italian Prime Minister Prodi and Foreign Secretary D’Alema due to  participate at the opening of the UN General Assembly session in a week’s time.
“The commitments made by the government in parliament in July,” stated D’Elia and Zamparutti, “need to be followed up by presenting at the UN a proposal for a resolution for a universal moratorium on capital executions with view to complete abolition of the death penalty.”
Hands Off Cain, an organisation formed in 1993 with the purpose of achieving such an objective, predicts the pro moratorium resolution to be approved at the General Assembly by an absolute majority of votes.
“It would be an important achievement in the fight against the death penalty which has had united cross parliamentary support in Italy in recent years,” concluded D’Elia and Zamparutti.
