Hands Off Cain's online moratorium campaign moves to Sweden today with the fourth national launch of the online appeal to the United Nations to approve a resolution for a worldwide moratorium on executions.
The Stockholm launch will also serve as an opportunity to reinforce HOC's call to Miss World contestants to participate in the beauty pageant due to be held in Nigeria on December 7.
HOC believes that participation, rather than a boycott of the event, will be a better means of campaigning in favour of Amina Lawal and against the death penalty in Nigeria. Ms Lawal's death-by-stoning sentence by an Islamic court for having a child out of wedlock prompted the calls for a boycott. However, turning the spotlight off Nigeria, that only has Sharia law in 12 of its 36 states, may sound the death-knell of its fledgling democracy.
Ms Lawal herself has asked that contestants go to Nigeria. Her declaration, given to the HOC delegation that met her in Abuja on October 16, will be shown on video during the press launch. The online campaign presentation was held at The Lobby's Cuban Room at Rådmansgatan hosted by MEP Benedetto Della Vedova for HOC, Miss Sweden World Sophia Hedmark and TV3 Project Manager Sophia Wingren . Stockholm is the fourth city to host HOC's Stop the Death Penalty through Internet campaign after Rome, Madrid and Nuremberg. The next stages will be Athens, Tokyo, Paris and New York. Swedish television websites are promoting Hands Off Cain's Stop the death penalty through Internet campaign following the press launch in Stockholm on Wednesday.
