High treason and premeditated murder are capital crimes. The death penalty is optional for drug manufacture and trafficking, and, in 1993, Myanmar adopted a law that allows for death penalty to be imposed for drug offenses under certain circumstances. The law permits the execution of 13 year olds but provides suspension of executions or commutation of the death sentence for pregnant women. The right to appeal is guaranteed by law.
