Human rights activists in Nigeria said they are confident the sharia judges will not be able to ignore the international appeals for clemency for Safiya Hussaini, who was condemned to death for adultery by an Islamic court.
Women's rights campaigner Ekekwa Ezinne said: "Depending on the grounds on which they let her off, if judgment is entered in her favour, it will set a precedent on the issue of convicting women of adultery on the basis of pregnancy alone."
