A court in Japan sentenced Kazuyuki Oikawa, 24, to death for killing two children and injuring another in a burglary.
"The crime was cruel and outrageous as he ruthlessly stabbed the unresisting infants again and again," said Presiding Judge Michinari Enokido at the Obihiro branch of the Kushiro District Court.
According to the ruling, Oikawa broke into Hajime Kikuchi's house in the town of Hiroo, southern Hokkaido, on August 8, 2001. After stealing six pieces of underwear, he tried to flee. But he was seen by Kikuchi's eldest daughter, Kazumi, and the other two children.
Oikawa inflicted a minor stabbing injury on Kazumi. He fatally stabbed Kikuchi's younger daughter Masami and his son Tetsuya with a knife he took from the kitchen. He turned himself in to the police about an hour after the incident.
Enokido said Oikawa's act fails to constitute the heavier murder-and-robbery charge and only murder charge should be applied to him on the grounds he made off with the underwear simply to deceive investigators.
But given the cruelty of the crime, the judge sentenced Oikawa the capital punishment, as demanded by the prosecution.
Kikuchi told reporters that Oikawa "deserves (the death sentence) since he destroyed our family."
