Human rights lawyers in the Carribean applauded the ruling by Britain's Privy Council judges that the mandatory death penalty is unconstitutional in seven Caribbean countries. The Council said such a sentence denied a person's basic humanity.
London-based Amnesty International said it was a "welcome step toward an execution-free Caribbean".
