"I call on the Chamber to ensure that the Italian government finally declares the truth on its commitment to the moratorium resolution," HOC General Secretary Sergio D'Elia said, also with reference to rumours that the Italian government has already given up on the presentation of the moratorium resolution this year recently published by an Italian daily newspaper.
"We have requested an official denial of that story as it seemed so incredible to us, but we didn't got one," D'Elia said. "In recent months the Italian government in its own capacity and as EU term president has solemnly and repeatedly announced their conviction and commitment to this battle, but then it did nothing other than present doubts, pretexts and alibis, taking every opportunity to drop it and go back on their proclaimed commitment."
The Italian government has declared that the conditions for the presentation of the moratorium resolution to the GA at present have not been fulfilled as some European partners have opposed it.
"Italy has not had to succumb to conditions imposed by others but has actually imposed them on itself as the EU - unlike the UN Security Council - does not have a right to veto initiatives either politically or by the terms of its statute," D'Elia commented
