Zhou Kun, a Chinese police officer given a national award for huge drug busts, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve by a central Chinese court after being convicted of trafficking 5,000 kilograms (11,000 pounds) of heroin. Zhou was sentenced in Wuhan city, Hubei province after being convicted of leading a gang of drug traffickers in transporting heroin from south-western Yunnan province to Wuhan.
His gang was arrested in November 2002 while transporting heroin from Yunnan, which borders the Golden Triangle poppy growing region in Burma and Laos.
