In 2002, Hands Off Cain counted 49 executions, including at least one woman. According to interior ministry statements monitored by Agence France-Presse 48 people were beheaded in the country in 2002. The record number of executions took place in 1995 with 191 executions.
Saudi Arabia has one of the highest execution rates in the world, both in terms of number of people killed and in relation to its population. Between 1980 and 2002, approximately 1,500 people have been put to death in the country. About two thirds of those executed in Saudi Arabia are foreigners.
