In a landmark case, a magistrate in Botswana reserved passing a sentence and ordered a man found guilty of raping a teenage girl to undergo an HIV/AIDS test. While it has the highest HIV infection percentage, crime statistics show that rape has been the leading vice in the country. These two factors have prompted some citizens, particularly women activists, to call for the death sentence on convicted rapists found to be HIV positive. They argue this would deter potential rapists and stem the further spread of HIV as well as doing justice to the victim because an HIV infection is like a death sentence. In line with this, women activists and other anti-HIV/AIDS campaigners have been calling for compulsory HIV tests for those found guilty of rape.
