In an interview with Sunday Vanguard Abdul Oroh, journalist, Nigerian parliamentarian and Hands Off Cain board member, stated: "I want to see a bill that will introduce a moratorium on death penalty in Nigeria, I don't believe in capital punishment. I am not pushing for outright abolition right now, even though I want to see death penalty abolished in Nigeria. I want a situation where we don't execute people for five years like you quit smoking for five years, do you want to smoke again? I want us to elevate human life, I want us to abolish the death penalty ultimately, so we can now ask ourselves, will it reduce violent crime? Would violent crime increase because of it? We don't have enough statistics now, that is why I will first push for a moratorium. I believe that the death penalty is not a deterrent, it didn't stop coup plotting. What stopped coup plotting was our promotion of democratic values as alternative to coup plotting. Then if we improve the economy, create opportunities for majority of the people, will that reduce crime? So, let us push for those issues that will elevate human life, that will create opportunities for people and then see if there wont be greater respect for human lives and values".
