In February, the Cyangugu genocide court, in Rwanda's southwest, sentenced 3 people to death after finding them guilty of genocide and crimes against humanity. The defendants were jointly charged with killing 27 ethnic Tutsis during the 1994 Rwandan genocide at Kamashangi and Kigenge villages in Gisuma Commune. Other charges included raping Tutsi women, destruction and looting of property, and membership of armed gangs which terrorized Tutsi peasants. The suspects were assisted by a defense counsel provided by the non-governmental organization Avocats sans Frontières (Lawyers without Borders) and had 15 days to file an appeal.
