In Japan a creche operator accused of brutally beating two children to death and injuring four others was handed a maximum penalty of 20 years imprisonment.
In handing down the ruling on Junko Izumo, 31, former operator of the Smile Mom creche in Yamato, Kanagawa Prefecture, Presiding Yokohama District Court Judge Hiroshi Yamura blasted her treatment of the creche's children.
"The defendant inflicted violence on nonresistant children who she should have treated with love," Yamura said. "It was an extremely cruel crime. There is no room for leniency."
After the ruling, the mother of the 2-year-old boy who died of a fractured skull inflicted at the day-care center expressed her disappointment that "Izumo didn't tell the truth."
"I wasn't convinced that physical violence resulting in death was the right charge," she said. "I hoped she would get the death penalty."
The mother of the other boy, who died of brain injuries, said: "I wasn't satisfied with the sentence. My son will never come back."
