In March, the extradition of Mohammed Abdel Monem Abbas, 26, who was arrested in Malta in 1998 following an Interpol request, was requested by Turkey, so that he could face charges of murdering Briton Edgar Fernandes, 37, a London librarian who had been on holiday in Turkey, in April 1998. After Turkey requested Abbas's extradition, Maltese authorities sought an assurance that he would not be sentenced to death or executed. Turkey replied that no one had been executed there for more than 10 years and a bill to abolish the death penalty was before Parliament.
