In Omaha, a man who killed 2 children should be sentenced to death, a jury found. Aggravating circumstances merit the death penalty for Arthur Lee Gales, the jury found. The decision will be presented to a 3-judge panel, which will sentence Gales to death or to life in prison. Gales was convicted two years ago of two counts of 1st-degree murder and one count of rape in the November 2000 rape and strangulation of 13-year-old Latara Chandler, and the strangulation of her 7-year-old brother, Tramar. Gales also was convicted of attempted 2nd-degree murder for beating the children's mother, Judy Chandler, and leaving her to die at a railroad track dead-end. Gales had been on death row, but the state Supreme Court ordered him to be resentenced in light of a U.S. Supreme Court decision last year that juries, not judges, should determine whether circumstances merit the death penalty.
