A 3-judge panel will now decide if convicted killer Erick Vela will be sentenced to death in the electric chair or life in prison for his role in the killings of 5 people at a U.S. Bank branch in Norfolk last year. A jury deliberated for nearly 10 hours before determining Vela's role in the slayings merits the death penalty, deciding that 5 aggravating circumstances existed in all 5 deaths. The final decision on the death penalty rests with the judges. It could be several weeks before the panel of judges is seated. Vela pleaded guilty in June to five counts of 1st-degree murder.
