In Paris police blocked demonstrators protesting against the death penalty in the United States at the same time that George W. Bush was being sworn in as president in Washington.
Bush is a former governor of Texas, the state that holds the record number of executions in the Federation.
About a hundred demonstrators were on their way to lay a wreath of flowers at the feet of the statue of liberty close to one of the bridges over the Seine when the police intervened to stop the protest.
