In recent years, the death penalty has been abolished for 13 crimes, but 23 articles of the Criminal Code still provide for it. However, no death sentences have been carried out in Ukraine since March 11, 1997, although the courts continue to hand them down. In fact, 131 persons were sentenced to death in 1998. The Supreme Court considered appeals from 165 prisoners on death row and upheld 148 sentences.
