In Trenton, the state Supreme Court overturned 4-3 the death sentence of John Chew. Chew, 53, was convicted on June 22, 1995 of the Jan. 12, 1993 murder of his girlfriend, Theresa Bowman, 29, so he could collect her $250,000 life-insurance policy. The court ruled that the lawyer who represented should have introduced evidence during the penalty phase of his trial that the convicted murderer suffered from extreme mental or emotional disturbance. There are 13 other convicted killers on death row, but no one has been executed in New Jersey since 1963.
