INDIA: COURT AWARDS DEATH PENALTY TO MAN FOR GIRLFRIEND MURDER

In a landmark judgment, sessions judge, Senapati district, A. Noutuneshwari, on 5 February 2019 awarded death penalty to a 29-year old man Yumkhaibam Rohit alias Rajesh, son of late Y. Riyajuddin of Khergao Makha Leikai, for murdering his girlfriend Pukhrihongam Memi Chanu daughter of P. Gourasing Meetei in August last year at Kshetrigao Thambalkhong Makha Leikai.
This is the second death sentence awarded in Manipur state since Independence and the first to a person charged with murder.
The trial was completed in a record time of 20 days after examination of 28 prosecution witnesses, making it the fastest trial of a murder case in the State.
