INDIA: FIVE MEN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR 2006 MUMBAI TRAIN BLASTS

A Mumbai court has awarded capital punishment to five convicts in 2006 Mumbai local train serial blasts in which 188 people died and more than 700 got injured. The court while announcing its verdict today also awarded life term to 7 convicts.
The special Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) court judge, Yatin Shinde awarded the death sentence to Faisal Sheikh, Asif Khan, Kamal Ansari, Ehtesham Sidduqui and Naveed Khan who planted the bombs in various trains.
Electrical circuit maker for the bombs, Mohammed Sajid Ansari; Mohammed Ali, who used his home for bomb making; Dr Tanveer Ansari, one of the conspirators, and logistical support providers Majid Shafi, Muzzammil Shaikh, Sohail Shaikh and Zamir Shaikh are given life sentence by the court.
After the court's verdict the defence counsel in the case said that it would approach Mumbai High Court with its plea, while claiming that the MOCOCA court has awarded punishment to innocents. 
The seven blasts on July 11, 2006 took place within a span of 11 minutes from 6.24 pm to 6.35 pm.
The terrorists had used around 20 kg of RDX to execute their plan. The bombs were packed into pressure cookers.
The anti-terrorism squad (ATS) in its chargesheet filed in November 2006 named in total 30 persons as accused. Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Azam Cheema, who had been identified as the key conspirator in the case and some other Pakistani accused have not been arrested so far.
