INDIA: TWO SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR MINOR RAPE AND MURDER

The additional sessions judge of Kamalpur, in Tripura's Dhalai district, sentenced two youngsters to death for raping and murdering a 12-year-old girl in February last year.
On the night of February 7, 2014, the victim had gone to her neighbour's house Rashida Tripura (25) in Desharaipara, under Raishyabari police station, to watch television and had been raped and murdered by him and his relative Jhani Tripura (20). Villagers had found her body the following morning in a nearby forest.
According to the superintendent of police (Dhalai), Bijoy Debbarma, a case had been registered on the same day on the basis of a written complaint by the victim's father Demsing Tripura (32).
Based on the FIR, police had launched an investigation and arrested both Rashida and Jhani. The case was investigated by additional superintendent of police Dhalai Kishore Debbarma and a chargesheet was submitted within four months.
Apart from the death sentence, the court also ordered seven years' rigorous imprisonment and fine of Rs 10,000 for the duo under Section 4 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.
