the Gauhati High Court in India extended the stay on execution of murder convict Mahendra Das once again till July 21, after the central government sought time to file an affidavit explaining circumstances that led to the inordinate delay in rejecting his mercy petition. The order was issued by Division Bench of Chief Justice MB Lokur and Justice H. Baruah. Das was sentenced to death on August 18, 1997, for murdering Hara Kanta Das in Guwahati on April 24, 1996.
