INDIA: HOOCH: BILL ON DEATH PENALTY CLEARED

following the Ahmedabad hooch tragedy, the Gujarat Assembly passed a Bill proposing stringent punishment, up to death penalty, to deal with the illicit liquor trade. The Bombay Prohibition (Gujarat Amendment) Bill 2009 was passed with a majority vote, even as the Congress abstained from proceedings. “We have taken a historic step to amend the prohibition law and to make it very stringent,” said minister of state for home Amit Shah.
