India rectified its vote on the anti death penalty resolution approved on April 21 by the UN Commission on Human Rights, changing its stance from voting against to abstaining.
The change came following the intervention in Geneva of a Hands Off Cain delegation which reminded the Indian delegation of their country's voting pattern in previous years (it had always abstained) and the assurances given by Vice Foreign Minister Deepa Wadhwa that his country would also abstain in the 2004 vote.
India rectified its vote against by sending a note to the Secretariat of the Human Rights Commission informing them of their abstention.
The final result of the voting on the resolution was thus 28 votes in favour, 19 against and 6 abstentions.
The surprise result in the voting was given by Nigeria with its stance against the resolution. Hands Off Cain sent a note of disapproval to President Olusegun Obasanjo regarding the events in Geneva.
"The position expressed by the Nigerian delegation at the Commission on Human Rights is in grave contrast with the personal committments against the death penalty and in favour of an international moratorium on capital executions directly expressed to us by you," reads a letter signed by Hands Off Cain Secretary Sergio d'Elia and Lista Bonino MEP Marco Cappato.
The vote given by Sierra Leone was also unexpected for the government had given instructions for a favourable vote on a pro moratorium resolution at the UN following a mission in the country by Hands Off Cain and by No Peace Without Justice.
