A court sentenced a priest, Shushil Murmu, to death for sacrificing a nine-year-old child to appease a deity in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand. The priest had recently sacrificed the boy to please a goddess in the state's Jamtara district, nearly 200 km from state capital Ranchi. He was booked by the police on a complaint lodged by the child's parents and sentenced to death by a court in Jamtara district. The state's High Court upheld the lower court's order. While delivering the verdict, the court said it was a case of extreme culpability which rendered life imprisonment inadequate.
