Kumaran and Senbagam were acquitted by Justices Chockalingam and Karnan of the Madras High Court in India. They were sentenced to death for murder by a Puducherry court in November, 2009, after Auroville police recovered a dead body on January 25, 2001. The prosecution had ‘failed miserably’ identifying the corpse.
