several Indian civil liberties and democratic rights organisations sought the immediate release of Mohammed Afzal Guru, who was falsely implicated in the Indian parliament attack case on December 13, 2001, and awarded capital punishment. A resolution in this connection was passed at the conference of civil liberties and democratic rights organisations held in Mumbai on May 18. They have unanimously appealed to the union government to immediately release Guru. The civil liberties and democratic rights organizations said that the evidence against Guru was weak but Indian courts had found it fit to convict him and to award him capital punishment and added that the Government of India had acquiesced to the sentence passed.
