the head of Indonesia's anti-drug agency, I Made Mangku Pastika, called for the speedy execution of convicted drug traffickers on death row.
"The attorney-general should accelerate the execution of the 39 drug traffickers already sentenced to death. Execute them," Pastika said.
Speaking at a gathering in the capital Jakarta to mark national anti-drugs day, Pastika's statement was welcomed by a chorus of approval from the thousands in attendance. Pastika said that the death sentence was justified due to the suffering inflicted on Indonesian families by drug abusers. He said that at least 15,000 Indonesians, mostly young people, died of drug abuse here each year.
