INDONESIA. GOVT URGED TO HELP INDONESIAN FACING DEATH PENALTY IN EGYPT

Ahamd Hosein Hutagalung, a member of the North Sumatra provincial legislative council, appaled to the government to help an Indonesian citizen, Ali Darman, who was facing the death sentence by decapitation in Egypt for allegedly killing a Malaysian, Zaki Ayyub, 27, and his family in Cairo.
"The ill-fated Indonesian must be saved from the death penalty," Hutagalung said.
According to Hutagalung, the government could save the Indonesian citizen who came from West Sumatra province by making approaches to the chairman of the Egyptian advisory council or the victim's family who could forgive Ali Darman.
He further said the government through the Indonesian embassy in Egypt should work hard to help Ali Darman as the matter would affect Indonesia's image within the international community. "The death penalty against Ali Darman should be commuted to life imprisonment so that he can still live and be visited by his family in Egypt," he said.
