Indonesia should replace the death penalty with a maximum punishment of life and 20 years imprisonment, law expert Todung Mulya Lubis said.
According to Lubis, the death sentence is against the right to life guaranteed by the 1945 Constitution.
To abolish the death penalty, Lubis said, a moratorium should be declared.
Meanwhile, legislator Constant Ponggawa said it was ironic that Indonesia was still applying capital punishment when the country was a member of the UN Human Rights Council.
