INDONESIA: TWO DEATH-ROW CONVICTS TO BE EXECUTED BY YEAR END

the Indonesian Attorney General`s Office (AGO) will execute death-row convict Jurit bin Abdullah at the end of this year, Deputy Attorney General for General Crimes (Jampidum) Abdul Hakim Ritonga said. In addition, Ritonga said, the AGO would also execute a Nigerian-born drug convict, Ona Denis, who held a Malawian passport. Ona Denis is currently being held in a Nusakambangan jail in Cilacap, Central Java. He said the two men had exhausted all of the existing legal possibilities to avoid execution. "We are going confirm the decision to the Banten and South Sumatra high prosecution offices," Ritonga said. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Banten high prosecution office, Indra Gunawan, said Jurit bin Abdullah`s case had passed through all existing legal processes. Jurit was sentenced to death by the Sekayu District Court in South Sumatra in April 2008 for the murder of Soleh bin Zaidan in Banyuasin in May 1997. After the two court verdicts, Jurit filed for a judicial review with the Supreme Court (MA) and for clemency from President Yudhoyono but both of his appeals were rejected.
