Indonesian prosecutors asked for Abu Bakar Bashir, the Muslim cleric and alleged leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah terrorist group, to be sentenced to eight years' imprisonment for his alleged role in the Bali bombings and other attacks. Bashir was accused of inciting the Bali attack, which killed more than 200 people in 2002, and the Marriott hotel bombing in Jakarta in 2003. The offences could have carried the death penalty and the request suggested officials were not confident of a guilty verdict. Bashir denied the charges.
