Indonesia's Supreme Court upheld the death sentences passed on three leaders of an armed Christian group accused of a series of murders in Sulawesi province.
Fabianus Tibo, 55, Marianus Riwu, 43, and Dominggus da Silva, 37, were sentenced to death by a district court in Poso in the Central Sulawesi province on April 5.
The three led a Christian gang during clashes pitting Muslims and Christians in Poso district in May and June 2000. The court found them guilty of a series of grisly murders.
Executions are usually carried out by firing squad.
Top security minister Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said 100 paramilitary police have been sent to Poso because of rising tension after the court upheld the death sentences.
