Indulis Berzins, Minister of Foreign Affairs, praised the report on the human rights situation worldwide, including Latvia, made by the U .S. State Department. Berzins pointed out that this report, compared to the one in 1993, was more favourable for Latvia. The minister said that progress had been achieved in the human rights sector in Latvia. The report stressed that there were no political prisoners in Latvia, as well as no political executions and that this was an achievement.
