On February 4, Parliament approved the first reading of legislation on Protocol No. 6, with 73 MPs voting in favor, 16 opposed and 1 abstention.
This improves the chances of Latvia's gaining entry to the European Union as, stung by its failure to join the first tier of EU applicants, it is hoping to start entry talks in 1999.
