September 26, 2026 - IRAN. A woman, Mahboubeh Shabani, sentenced to death over January protests

Branch One of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court has sentenced Mahboubeh Shabani, a 33-year-old detainee from the January 2026 protests, to death. She is currently held in the women’s ward of Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad.

Based on information received by Hengaw, the court sentenced Shabani, a Mashhad resident, to death on security-related charges, including what authorities described as “operational action in support of Israel, the United States, and individuals affiliated with opposition groups.” Her case had previously been investigated under the charge of moharebeh (waging war against God). The sentence was formally communicated to her lawyer on September 26, 2026.

The charges primarily relate to Shabani’s assistance to injured protesters during demonstrations on January 8 and 9, 2026, including transporting them on her personal motorcycle to medical facilities.

Her trial was held before Branch One of the Mashhad Revolutionary Court on September 1, 2026.

According to an earlier Hengaw report, Intelligence Department forces arrested Shabani at around 8:00 p.m. on February 2, 2026, at Azadi Square in Mashhad during the widespread protests. She was subjected to violence and beaten during the arrest.

Shabani remains detained in Ward 6, the women’s ward of Vakilabad Prison. With no family or guardian to support her, she is in a particularly vulnerable situation and under severe psychological pressure.
