Iran carried out at least 198 executions, including at least 6 women and a juvenile, in 2001. Two of the women were stoned to death. At least 250 cases of whippings were carried out in the same year, according to Amnesty International
Between 1991 and 2001, Iran executed around 5,000 drug pushers, the Economist reported. More than 90,000 people - some 60% of the prison population - are in jail on drugs offences. Yet the number of addicts continued to rise: about 2 million Iranians were opium and heroin addicts. Iranian law imposes the death penalty for possession of more than 30 grams of heroin or five kilos (11 pounds) of opium.
Other offences punishable by death include: murder; armed robbery; rape; blasphemy and plotting to overthrow the Islamic regime.
Execution is generally by hanging, often in public places, but stoning is sometimes applied.
