regarding the 29 executions in Iran, Sergio D’Elia, Hands Off Cain Secretary, stated: “The executions today in Iran further prove the danger posed by Ahmadinejad. Many acknowledge and attempt to prevent the future threats to peace and world security represented by the Mullah’s regime. However, it seems that few acknowledge and prevent the daily threats practiced for decades by the Iranian regime against its own people.
After the extraordinary victory at the UN on the universal moratorium on executions, it doesn’t seem that governments, above all those in Europe, demonstrate the will to act in concrete ways, and in all circumstances. Not only Iran, but in Iraq, with the highly likely execution of Tareq Aziz. We are fighting with Marco Pannella and the other 100 Italian people that have joined the hunger strike for a 'Moratorium on the death penalty, even for Tareq Aziz'. It isn’t merely a humanitarian act, but a concrete political objective. Saving Tareq Aziz means breaking with the methods and practices used during the Saddam era and defending a perspective of rights and truth, of peace and justice in Iraq.'
