Iranian courts have sentenced at least 106 people arrested during the January 2026 protests to death, 35 of whom have already been executed. Another 63 remain at serious and imminent risk of execution, while the death sentences of eight others have been overturned, according to findings documented and verified by the Hengaw Organization for Human Rights.
Hengaw is releasing these findings in a special report marking World Day Against the Death Penalty on October 10. Drawing on evidence collected and verified by its Statistics and Documentation Center through October 9, 2026, the report details the death sentences imposed on protest detainees, the executions carried out, and the judicial proceedings and current status of their cases.
The report presents the following key findings:
Executions carried out: Iranian authorities have executed 35 of these prisoners in Alborz, Isfahan, Razavi Khorasan, Qom, Hamadan, Semnan, and Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari provinces.
Death sentences overturned: Courts have overturned the death sentences of eight prisoners in Tehran Province. All eight, however, remain at risk of receiving new death sentences during retrial proceedings.
Prisoners facing execution: Another 63 prisoners remain at serious and imminent risk of execution.
Cases under verification: Hengaw's legal experts are examining the cases of another 40 defendants held in prisons in Shiraz, Arak, Isfahan, Ardabil, Semnan, Yasuj, and Mashhad to establish their judicial status and determine whether death sentences have been issued.

Section 1 – Death sentences by province
Isfahan Province: Courts have sentenced 36 people to death. Eleven have been executed, including two in public, while 25 remain at risk of execution.
Tehran Province: Courts have sentenced 36 people to death. Eight have been executed, eight have had their death sentences overturned, and 20 remain at risk of execution.
Razavi Khorasan Province: Courts have sentenced 11 people to death. Five have been executed, while six remain at risk of execution.
Fars Province: Courts have sentenced seven people to death, all of whom remain at risk of execution.
Semnan Province: Courts have sentenced three people to death, all of whom have been executed.
Qom Province: Courts have sentenced three people to death, all of whom have been executed.
Alborz Province: Courts have sentenced three people to death, all of whom have been executed.
Yazd Province: Courts have sentenced three people to death, all of whom remain at risk of execution.
Qazvin Province: Courts have sentenced two people to death, both of whom remain at risk of execution.
Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province: One person was sentenced to death and subsequently executed.
Hamadan Province: One person was sentenced to death and subsequently executed.
The following section identifies 98 individuals whose death sentences have not been overturned, including those already executed. The remaining eight individuals, all sentenced to death in Tehran Province before their sentences were overturned, are listed separately in Section 3.

According to Hengaw's verified data, Iranian courts have sentenced at least seven women arrested during the January protests to death in Tehran, Isfahan, and Razavi Khorasan provinces. One woman's death sentence has been overturned, while the remaining six face the risk of execution.
